Low Cost Health Insurance: an alternative to crisis healthcare

health insuranceBetter Health Insurance Program

This program is a process of enabling people to increase control over their health and its determinants, and thereby improve their health. It is Preventive maintenance instead of crisis management.

Preventative maintenance

When we travel by air we are relying on a strict maintenance program where every single part of the plane is changed or inspected at a time interval based on the makers understanding of the life of each component. They don't wait for a part to fail. They do change this plan often as a result of such inspections when a part appears to have worn quicker than anticipated. When a fault does occur every other plane owner is notified and all planes are kept out of the air until the cause of the failure is identified  and the part has been replaced. We think we should take the same method caring for our own body.

What is wrong with the current Health Insurance system?

Today’s approach by most people to health revolves around the principle of there being no need to consult a medical practitioner until you become sick or you can't find a remedy yourself or you need  a doctor to help you obtain a certificate related to work. This relies on the basis that we only need to go to a doctor when something goes wrong. It's a bit like the plane part being allowed to fail. Can we take that risk?

However there are other factors. We are not saying doctors are not a valuable resource or you shouldn't visit them therefore please note that we are showing you how to use them in a better way.

  • The present medical system is under stress. It is basically a crisis management system
  • Sick patients with preventable illness clog up public hospitals
  • Increasing cost of medical insurance and private doctor’s  charges.
  • Doctors are not able to spend time monitoring an individual patient’s health
  • Tests require patients to come again but there is no follow up if they don't return
  • Doctors are not uniform in diagnosis as no one can be best at everything needed.
  • Booking an appointment to see a high cost specialist involves first consulting with a general doctor.
  • It is expensive and time consuming and mistakes can be made
  • Doctors only see patients who are sick
  • Doctors do make mistakes.
  • Ask your doctor at least 3 questions. What is wrong with me?; What will this medicine do to help me?; Are their any side effects?

What is the best low cost health insurance that has proven to be effective?

Actually it is not asking someone to provide an insurance policy. It is a method where you manage and maintain your own body and mind within the medical system under the supervision of a medical team appointed by you. You look after yourself using experts to test and teach you. Those with a pet dog will know they can't have chocolates because it will kill them. How often do we try to diet because we are not happy about our weight?  Did someone force you to consume those sugary drinks. But how do you know you are too fat. Your medical team can tell you exactly how much fat you have and can show you exactly where it is and how you can remove it. They will teach you about good fat.

Give yourself a birthday present every year. Not necessarily on your birthday but choose a time and date that is best for you. The overall cost is usually less than what you would normally spend maintaining a motor vehicle.

To change the way you manage your health meet with your doctor and explain that you want to set up a base line when you are well. You want a whole body check up to include the following list but make sure your doctor understands that this is to be a once a year program. Seek advice because some tests may be gender specific and, or only be needed to be done every 2-years. Also explain you want to keep a duplicate set of test results for your own personal records (some doctors don't like this but make them understand) This is essential because if you go on holidays or you move to another city you can take your WELLNESS FILE with you  The people who regulatory maintain planes or your car don't keep their findings to themselves. They keep a copy of what they give to the owners.

  1.  Full blood test,
  2. Chest x-ray,
  3. Renal (or similar kidney test),
  4. RAST or similar allergy test,
  5. Skin examination (look for skin damage),
  6. Measure heart functions, take ECG etc.
  7. Weight and Height and percentage of fat particularly the internal fat around your waist line
  8. Provide a written report. (If not agreed - doctor to report to you and you make notes.)

Your task is to find a permanent home for your data. Those on this private health insurance wellness plan scan all documents and file them in a folder with sub-folders for each year. A backup copy is made on a memory stick. Another useful tool is to prepare an excel sheet with the following headings

Head the table with the title "your name DAILY MEDICATION REPORT" insert at the head of 6 columns the headings: Date when medication changed, Time taken, Dosage, Brand Name, Active Ingredient, Purpose

If you take essential medication you can carry this list with you together with a list of people to contact if you are involved in an emergency situation.
Jane's Team recommends you consider using this plan as apart from a great idea it is done by many people and some organisations have been paying for their employees to have such tests.

It also is very helpful. Let's say you take a lot of vitamins tablets and multi-vitamins. Did you ask your doctor first or did you believe the advertising?

In your discussion with your doctor explain that you take vitamins and give a reason. A test of your blood will provide evidence of the need if any to take anything at all. If you are short of anything essential it may mean your diet needs to change. Warning be careful of "artificial vitamins. (See part 2)

It is really simple to get to know your body.

Any more?

Sure! You may find that one or more tests may show that you are getting close being a problem and minor adjustments to food, weight control, exercise are usually enough. If not, a small medication dose may be needed. This is fine tuning to optimise your health.

Sometimes your annual test will discover a more serious problem. Let's say you test shows that one of your heart valves is faulty and that one day you will need to replace it. Instead of being worried you will be pleased that this was found now instead of it failing and you die. Depending on the problem you and your team of medical experts will manage a plan to optimise the rest of your body. You might need to get rid of some fat, do different exercise, reduce stress and so on. When you find out problems early you are in control.

Apart from finding out if you do have a problem you will only need to visit your doctors once a year. Many people become so interested in this method and how it has benefited them they visit more their Medical team more often to fine tune their body.
